Challenger intrinsically safe PC terminals permit plant operators full remote access to software running on a conventional IBM-compatible PC or UNIX machine. Various combinations of display, keyboard and pointing device may be connected to a PC located back in an unclassified area via a data transmission card which also incorporates the intrinsic safety interface. The physical data connection is made with CAT-7 data cable. Transmission distances up to 1,600 feet (500 meters) are possible, and up to four terminals and associated data transmission cards can be supported by a single PC.

Compared with previously used protection techniques involving purged or explosion proof enclosures, the Challenger system enables easy installation of remote terminals. Because the associated PC remains in an unclassified plant area (usually a control room) it may be upgraded or replaced at any time without affecting the safety or set-up of the remote terminal.

Challenger terminals are available as a fully assembled station for floor, wall, or ceiling mount, or as individual modules to install in your existing panel or custom enclosure. Off-the-shelf enclosures and mounting accessories are manufactured from stainless steel and designed to meet the rugged performance requirements of industrial applications.
New modules and housings are always under development — ask about touch-screen displays, card readers, barcode scanning, fingerprint recognition, etc.
